RESULTS AT A GLANCE

THE CHALLENGE
Transform the Lilly Women’s Network to the Women’s Initiative for Leading at Lilly.

BACKGROUND

In 2015, Joan led an internal research project to explore the factors contributing to the decline in female representation at senior leadership levels and to better understand their overall experience as employees.

The journey began with hundreds of women around the globe who participated in a series of focus groups to share their experiences at Lilly. Joan also conducted interviews with the Executive Committee and key senior leaders to frame and understand the company’s top priorities and culture. Through this work, the Lilly Women’s Employee Journey was born. The Lilly Women’s Employee Journey helped Lilly understand what women of all ages and levels were experiencing at the company, using their data and their stories to illustrate impact. The findings were then mapped back to Millennial women in particular, to illustrate the impact of these factors on the future of the workforce.

The leaders in Global Diversity and Inclusion championed the idea of replicating the journey model to focus on minority talent. As a result, we were engaged in this research solution-oriented approach for Minority talent focusing on African American, Hispanic, and Asian talent with further insights segmented by Millennials and Gender.
